Steel Quality in TMT Bars: Understanding India’s New Steel Classifications in Construction

Steel serves as the essential backbone in buildings of all sizes. Selecting proper steel directly affects building safety and durability. TMT bars are specialised steel rods that work alongside concrete to form the basic structural framework.

The steel industry in India has updated its classification system. The outdated terms once used to describe producers have been eliminated from official industry terminology. This former classification method is no longer recognised and has been replaced by newer industry standards that better reflect current manufacturing practices. Instead, the Indian government has introduced a new structure, officially classifying steel producers into three categories based on raw material origin and manufacturing methods:

  1. Producers who use virgin iron ore as the base raw material.
  2. Producers who melt and refine scrap steel through electric furnaces.
  3. Producers who reprocess pre-manufactured billets into final products.

This classification goes beyond being just a formality. It directly impacts the quality, sustainability, and suitability of steel for construction applications.
